Second Graders Cowboy and Cowgirl Up!

The second graders are singing cowboy/cowgirl songs such as “Home On the Range” and “Get Along Little Dogies.” Each of the students has been dubbed with a cowpoke name such as “Tex,” “Dusty,” “Cactus Pete” or “Slim.” Of course, “Doc” Whitehouse sings and strums along.

7th Graders Are Rocking in General Music

The present seventh grade general music class has taken on a very difficult piece “Street Song” by Carl Orff. The students are doing a great job on the music and, in fact, one young fellow, Cyrus, was the first player in my 23 years at the school to play a particularly difficult variation. Great job to all. The piece may be ready for the spring concert!

Earth Day a Big Hit!

Earth Day 2012 (April 26) was a great day at Wilbur/McMahon Schools! Students, teachers, parents, staff and administrators pitched in and cleaned, weeded, planted, recycled, made, buried, composted, birded, played, helped, moved and helped our planet in many ways. We recycled plastic ‘clamshell’ containers into miniature herb gardens. We planted vegetables in milk cartons to be taken home. We recycled crayons and planted plants and trees. I organized the event and EVERYONE pitched in! The Sogkonate Garden Club donated bags and gloves and the Middletown Home Depot donated plants and soil and seeds (picture below.) The weather cooperated as students helped move lumber for the new Dundery Brook Trail near the school. Check out the pictures!

EARTH DAY 2012!

Howdy folks, Earth Day will be celebrated on Thursday, April 26 from 12:30 until 2:30. There will be over 20 stations set in and around the school looking at gardening, recycling, birding, helping with the Dundery Brook Trail, weeding, trash archaeology and sunflowers. Parents are invited to help out. Dress appropriately and bring along your own garden tools (…or not, we have quite a few implements.) There is also a book swap (bring a book-take a book) and we could use the loan of binoculars for the birding session. Also, if you have any ‘clamshell’ containers such as those used for spinach, salads or sandwiches please bring them along (they are going to become tiny herb gardens.) Help us take care of our little corner of the world! The rain date is Friday, April 27.

Final Recital for 8th Grade

Eighth grade students will play their final recorder for the quarter on Monday, April 9. Students have all chosen pieces to prepare and perform. The recital will count for 20 per cent of their term grade. The final term of their middle school career at Wilbur School begins the same day as the schedule changes from meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays to M-W-F. There are a number of mp3 songs on the Recorder Rehearsal page.

Chorus to McCoy Stadium!

The Middle School Chorus will be singing our National Anthem at the PawSox game on Tuesday, April 10! The game starts at noon so we’ll be leaving Little Compton around 10AM for the trek up north to Pawtucket. Parents of choristers are invited to join us either by bus or by meeting us at Gate A around 11:15AM. We’ll be back at school by 4PM for pick-up. Of course, we’ll keep an eye on the weather. This will be the third time the chorus has had the honor of singing the Anthem for a PawSox game.
